Wild Horses & Southern Utah ASP Tag-Along
Oct 9-14, 2025
Hosted by Ted York and Assisted by Doug Bennett
Join Ted York and Doug Bennett on a tag-along experience to Utah! Ted will lead us west of Salt Lake City in search of wild horse herds. This is where Ted captured his World Photographic Cup Winning Reportage photo of the fighting horses! This 5-day trip will then explore unique sights in the northern part of the San Rafael Swell, then on to Hanksville finishing up in Moab, UT.
This trip has been curated to be friendly to SUV’s having a little more ground clearance than regular sedans as a lot of driving will be on unpaved, but improved dirt/gravel roads.
October 9th
Arrive Salt Lake City: Lodging TBD
October 10th (Day 1)
Wild Horse Area
We’ll depart the hotel early heading out on the actual historic Pony Express Trail leading west out of Salt Lake City to find the wild horse herds. We will search out and photograph the horses until around noon or after. We will have lunch at a small store in the small town of Vernon as we head out for our next venue.
Northern San Rafael Swell Area
In the afternoon, we will make our way down to the Utah’s Little Grand Canyon for our late afternoon/sunset shoot. See this link for more on Utah’s Little Grand Canyon. https://www.visitutah.com/articles/san-rafael-swell-season After our sunset shoot, we will make our way to the small town of Ferron, UT for our overnight stay.
October 11th (Day 2)
Northern San Rafael Swell Area – Buckhorn Wash
After breakfast, we’ll depart for Buckhorn Wash, a very scenic canyon wash that is loaded with history from ancient petroglyphs and pictographs dating back 2000 years and more, a dinosaur footprint, and tunnels dug by DoD to test for hardened formations to withstand nuclear blasts (the sandstone proved too soft relative to the granite of Cheyenne Mountain near Colo Springs, CO). Buckhorn Wash was also the escape route Butch Cassidy used after robbing a mining payroll up near Price, UT as he headed for his hideout in the Robbers’ Roost maze of canyons east of Hanksville, UT.
We will then travel to Green River, UT for lunch after which we will drive to Hanksville, UT and check into our rooms. See more here: https://www.dukesslickrockcampground.com/luxury-cabins
We will have an evening shoot at the infamous “Moonscape Overlook” near Hanksville. See more here: https://photographerstrailnotes.com/american-southwest-preview/moonscape-overlook-photographers-guide
Dinner afterwards at Duke’s Slickrock Grill: https://www.dukesslickrock.com
October 12th (Day 3)
Hanksville Area

After a bit of recovery time from our early morning wakeup, we will head to Goblin Valley State Park. See more here: https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/goblin-valley/
Afterwards, to the extent you wish and are able, hiking up Little Wild Horse Canyon is a great experience and is very close by. See more here: https://www.utah.com/destinations/regions/the-holey-land/little-wild-horse-canyon/
